Webex recording and local transcription

Webex offers both cloud and local meeting recording. Which options you see depends on your account and site settings. Local recording is available on the free plan through the desktop app, but local recordings do not include transcripts; Webex also excludes recording transcripts from its free plan.

echo99 provides a separate way to capture meeting audio and transcribe it on your Mac. It records your microphone and the audio your Mac plays, rather than using Webex’s recording controls. Audio, transcripts, and generated summaries stay in your chosen folder.

How to record a Webex meeting with echo99

1. Complete echo99 setup: grant microphone and system-audio access and install the transcription models.
2. Join Webex on your Mac using computer audio. Confirm that you can hear the meeting through your Mac’s selected headphones or speakers.
3. Tell the participants you will record. Open echo99 in the menu bar and click Record.
4. At the end, click Stop Recording. Open Recordings to play the audio and read the transcript after processing finishes.

Before an important meeting, save a short test recording and confirm it contains both your voice and the other participants. Headphones help keep their voices out of your microphone track. During a recording, echo99 also warns you in its menu-bar panel (“Mic looks silent” or “System audio looks silent”) if one side stays silent for about 90 seconds while the other has sound.

Use computer audio, even when the meeting has a dial-in number

If you join the audio on a separate phone, that sound does not pass through your Mac. echo99 cannot directly capture it as system audio. Join the audio on the Mac you are recording instead, and keep that Mac awake and in the meeting.

If you only listen, start and stop recording manually. Automatic recording depends on another app using the microphone, so it should not be relied on for a listening-only session.

Review the discussion and keep your notes

The local transcript includes speaker labels and timestamps. Use full-call playback to check a decision or quotation. To turn the transcript into key points and action items, install a local model using the AI summaries guide; the resulting notes are saved as Markdown beside the recording.

If you already have a Webex MP4 recording, you can import the file for local transcription instead of recording it again.

Audio only, with sharing under your control

echo99 does not capture meeting video, slides, chat, or the participant list, and it does not publish anything to Webex. Other sound playing on your Mac may be captured too. If you need the presentation on video, use a suitable Webex recording option.

Recording locally does not change your organization’s recording rules. Let the participants know yourself; echo99 does not activate Webex’s recording indicator.
