Otter is a polished, team-oriented meeting assistant — but your audio is transcribed in its cloud and tied to an account. echo99 keeps recording, transcription, and speaker labels entirely on the Mac in front of you, for free.
What Otter.ai is
Otter.ai is a cloud meeting assistant: it transcribes conversations in real time, writes AI
summaries and action items, and builds a searchable, shareable archive across your team.
Historically its OtterPilot bot joins your Zoom, Google Meet, and Teams calls; a 2025 desktop app
added bot-free local recording as well. It runs on the web, macOS, Windows, iOS, and Android. If
you want a cross-platform, team-wide knowledge base with AI chat over your meetings, Otter is one
of the most established options — the trade-off is that your audio is processed in its cloud.
echo99 vs Otter.ai

Otter.ai
How it records
Captures your mic and your Mac's audio output locally — no bot in the call

Cloud transcription in real time — audio is uploaded to Otter's servers; no offline mode

A core strength: live summaries, action items, and Otter AI Chat across your meetings — processed in the cloud
Raw audio
Keeps mic.wav + system.wav as separate tracks you own
Audio lives in Otter's cloud; MP3 export on paid plans, transcript-only on the free plan
Speaker labels

When Otter.ai is the better choice
You need a cross-platform, team-wide system rather than a solo Mac tool: teammates on Windows
or mobile, a bot that auto-joins meetings you can’t attend, live captions during the call,
or AI chat, CRM, and Slack integrations over a shared, searchable archive. Otter’s cloud is
the point for a distributed team.
When echo99 is the better choice
Your calls must not be uploaded to anyone’s cloud; you want the actual recordings
— clean, separate WAV tracks — not just notes about them; you want speaker-labeled
transcripts that work offline and put names to the people you talk to regularly; or you simply
don’t want another account and subscription. echo99 is free and on-device, full stop.
